Both formats are useful
XLSX is convenient when you want a formatted workbook that opens naturally in Excel. CSV is simpler and portable across spreadsheets, CRMs and data tools. The best format depends on what you plan to do after export.
Phone numbers are identifiers, not quantities
A WhatsApp phone number should be treated as text. Spreadsheet programs sometimes interpret long digits as numeric values and display scientific notation. A correct exporter writes phone cells with text semantics rather than relying on the spreadsheet to guess.
When to choose XLSX
Choose XLSX for a user-friendly workbook with columns such as Name, Phone, Comment, Resolved and Source. It is usually the easiest format for a non-technical user who wants to review or filter contacts.
When to choose CSV
Choose CSV when importing into another application or processing the contact list with scripts. CSV is transparent and broadly supported, but different spreadsheet apps can interpret cells differently, so phone formatting still matters.
Keep a clean master copy
For important work, keep the original export unchanged and create a separate working copy for cleaning, deduplication or adding sales/status information.
